Editing

I am the founding editor-in-chief of Spectrum.

I have edited or top-edited every single article and special package on that site from its launch in January 2008 until now, with the exception of two brief periods of maternity leave. Under my leadership, the site as a whole, its art and our articles–and in particular the longform pieces–have won numerous awards.

I also edited all of the news at Nature Medicine between January 2003 and December 2007.

And as a contributing editor to Nature and as News Editor for Nature Medicine, I edited several special packages of content. You can see examples of these at the link below:

I have also edited or top-edited:

Navigating Newsrooms as a Minority The Open Notebook, May 2019
I have experienced racism in the newsroom. This hasn’t surprised me. I have been black my whole life, so racism has been a fixture of my whole life. What has surprised me, as someone who transitioned to journalism from other work, is that I’ve encountered racism more frequently in journalism than I did in previous professions.

Writing When on the Autism Spectrum The Open Notebook, October 2018
A common saying in the autism community goes: “If you’ve met one autistic person, you’ve met one autistic person.” That is, we autistic people all vary in our traits. Some of these are problematic, but others can be beneficial. Because we observe and process the world differently, our writing can present unique perspectives. Autistic writers who learn to capitalize on the favorable traits and manage the more challenging ones can thrive in this profession.

  1. Dear Ms. Mandavilli,

    I hope you are well.

I work for Al Jazeera’s online team and we are currently working on the November issue of the award-winning Al Jazeera digital magazine – the theme of this issue is HEALTH.
Here is the link to our October issue: http://www.aljazeera.com/pressoffice/2013/10/al-jazeera-magazine-natural-born-stateless-2013106105112102629.html
I was wondering whether you would be available to write for us? We have a couple of topics in mind:

    – A broad piece looking at attitudes towards universal healthcare across the world – taking in Obamacare and how the Conservative government in the UK are dealing with the National Health Service (NHS). Also a look at how attitudes towards universal healthcare vary between countries and over time, who is best at providing it and who is worst, what the political and ideological influences are etc. How do attitudes towards healthcare define a country?

    – A historical piece looking at some of the events and people who have shaped medical developments, shifting attitudes towards healthcare, the role played by religious institutions etc. Also to have a side piece on how medical professionals have been involved in some of the darkest moments in human history and how those stories are told etc – eugenics, medical experimentation, the death penalty, torture etc.
Please do let me know whether any of these topics interest you and if you are interested in writing for us.
I look forward to hearing back from you,
    Indlieb
